Why would you want an email address at UCDhousestaff.com? Well, most people won't, but there are some advantages worth thinking about.
If you don't already have email, you might find it easier to sign up with UCDhousestaff.com than with the University's system. If you've gotten to this page, you're almost there!
If you already have an @ucdavis.edu address (or a commercial email address), you probably need another address like a hole in the head. But there are some advantages. Read the UCDavis policy on personal use of email. It's pretty generous, but it does give the University the right to monitor your email and use and/or disclose its content, and warns that "Email facility staff may inadvertently see the contents of email messages". That's fine if you never intend to discuss any patient-related matters by email. On the other hand, UCDhousestaff.com email is hosted entirely on a server operated and controlled by an MD, who is subject to the same professional standards as you.
You can also send and receive your UCDhousestaff.com email from the UCDhousestaff site (as well as from your favorite POP3 email client). Sure, you can do this with your UC Davis account by using services like Hotmail, but only if you're willing to give your email password to a company owned by Microsoft (an act which might violate University guidelines, and certainly violates patient confidentiality).
